Under the leadership of our beloved teacher Master Sheng Yen, the entire process of Dharma Drum Mountain’s initiation to inauguration, through to the establishment of its Dharma Drum University (now “Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts”), is thanks to the expertise and intelligence of many lay supporters from different walks of life who helped promote our ideals and facilitate the construction. Stanley Wei-kang Liu, honorary president of DDM Honorary Board of Directors, precisely personifies such a patron of the Dharma.

︎︎︎

Liu has served as chief executive officer of DDM Dharma Practice Society and president of DDM Honorary Board of Directors. He helped bring together efforts of professionals in different fields to promote the “Great Good Year” and “Good Vows Light up the World” social campaigns. He was in charge of planning and carrying out large-scale events for DDM, such as the foundation laying ceremony, the inauguration ceremony for DDM World Center for Buddhist Education, and the 5475 Fundraising Project─a great vow to establish Dharma Drum University.

I have known Stanley for over twenty years. He is a genuine, enthusiastic idealist, striving to achieve perfection, as well as a sincere, straightforward activist who speaks his mind. He is efficient and attentive; an honest man who sticks to the truth, even when it comes to making suggestions to the Master. Once, he shared with me that he had sometimes unwittingly offended the Master due to differences in opinion when discussing certain social issues. A few days later when he repented and apologized for his tone of voice, the Master would always show understanding and tolerance. This inner sense of reflective repentance has grown all the more intense since the Master’s passing.

Towards the end of 2012, Stanley was hospitalized for treatment. To inherit the past and inspire the future, he continued the position as president of the honorary board, until the end of 2013 when he decided to serve as honorary president instead. However, this period of recuperation reopened an opportunity for him to pick up painting, his past specialty, and devote himself to artistic creation.

The Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Ornament Sutra) says, “The mind is like a painter, able to portrait any object.” For more than 20 years, Liu has committed himself to engage in the endeavors of DDM with joyful gratitude and repentant reflection. When he picked up painting to depict Master Sheng Yen and Dharma Drum Mountain as reflected in his mind, I saw his very aspiration to support the Dharma even more evidently.

Everyone has a different route to spiritual development. Liu picked up painting as much as he took up his own path of cultivation, allowing me to see the infinite potential of an individual’s mind. Now, as he collected and compiled his works of oil painting created over the past few years to share with people in our society, apart from admiring and praising, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for his efforts. Here I would also like to share with you my motto of practice: Develop our Buddha-nature, awaken our awareness. Transform our character, change our habitual patterns. Purify our mind, return to our true nature.
